The passion for cars runs deep in our corporate culture. In fact, every one of our new career postings includes the phrase “passion for cars is a plus." Naturally, conversations outside of client work include some sort of car related subject. A subject gabbed most, Top Gear. For those who don’t know what Top Gear is, here’s the basic run down: a very popular U.K. automotive show that features 3 hosts with various degree of opinions and feature segments that include car reviews. Using Top Gear’s test track on an abandoned airfield, some of the world’s most powerful supercars and non-supercars get put through the ringer by an anonymous test driver (aka “The Stig”). By using the same driver and the same track for each car test, a baseline comparison can be done for each car. For car guys, it’s all about knowing which car is the best (aka the fastest) and TopGear provides that knowledge by posting lap times for each car tested.
Top Gear data is the very foundation for every car guys' argument as to why a particular car is better than the other. The only challenge is remembering every lap time record for each car. During an active argument, the realization of not knowing a specific lap time grew into a light bulb moment. How can we compare previous lap times from past shows quickly in order to win the argument? Answer: We need to make a Top Gear Infograpic. And we did.
But a static infographic can only take you so far and as a group we felt we needed to do more. What we wanted to do was dial it up a notch, but how…. We needed to go interactive. And we did. With so much data from past episodes we wanted the enthusiast to be able to zero in on a specific car easily. Essentially giving you, “the enthusiast”, the keys to the data and letting you take it for a joy ride. Building it wasn’t easy, but we felt by going the extra mile, this interactive visualization can turn into a resource for further needs to come.
We hope the experience using our interactive Top Gear visualization is as enjoyable as it was for us to make it. Enjoy!.

The Top Gear Test Track is a former Canadian airbase constructed during WWII and later used by British Aerospace as a manufacturing and testing facility. Test drivers from Lotus designed the track’s main route as shown above. Its layout is designed to push a car to its limit and really show the strengths and weaknesses of each car tested. Many of the turns tempt over-steer and under-steer to reveal imperfections of a car’s chassis.
THE STIG is Top Gear’s anonymous racecar driving machine. It is responsible for setting laps times on the Power Board to show how cars fare against each other on the Top Gear racetrack. To this day, there have been three different Stigs. When the Top Gear team needs some car testing done in other countries, they usually use one of The Stig’s cousins.
Some say he doesn't understand clouds and that his ear wax tastes like Turkish delight. All we know is, he's called, The Stig.
